SBCC student-athletes will hold a Food Drive called “Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat” over the next few weeks and then celebrate Halloween with a bowling competition.

The Food Drive is sponsored by the Vaquero Student-Athletes Captains Council, led by cross country runner Ian Roberts, in conjunction with the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County. Melissa Howard of Foodbank will provide two large receptacles to be placed at entrances to home games for women’s volleyball and football.

Anyone who donates food (canned fruits & veggies, bags of rice, pasta and cereal and jars of peanut butter) will get free admission to women’s volleyball matches on Oct. 23 and 30 and the next home football game vs. Santa Monica on Saturday, Nov. 2.

“As a community college, part of our job is to give back to the community and we feel like this is a great opportunity to do so,” said SBCC athletic director Ryan Byrne. “We really try to show our student-athletes examples of how they can make their community a better place and they are always eager to step up and contribute.

“It’s taking the team-player approach to another level. I'm really proud of our student-athletes and their awareness of problems that less fortunate people face and their desire to do something about it. It’s pretty special.”

The first annual Vaquero All-Sports Halloween Bowl is a fun, safe and competitive event that will take place at Zodo’s Bowling and Beyond in Goleta on Halloween night , Oct. 31 from 9 to 11 p.m. SBCC teams will square off in a “friendly but fierce” glow bowling competition in pursuit of the Best Team Trophy.
There will also be prizes for the best costume for team members and coaches.
